Round 6 – O35/5s vs North Rocks
Our second home game of the year saw us take on North Rocks.
With only 12 players available due to work commitments and all of us conscious of another game on the Sunday v Guilford we went into the game with the plan to;
- a) not get injured: and
- b) conserve energy.
Plan A was in jeopardy before the game even started when Alfy was floored by friendly fire in our pre-game warm up by Will who was about to execute the perfect volley and shot on goal. Instead of kicking the ball, Will connected with Alfy’s leg and knee!! In what would have been a terrible start to our weekend they both went down but thankfully for the rest of us they both managed to make it on the park.
The game was a tight affair with Alfy coping an early warning from the referee for talking back…and in what is probably a first for Alfy he copped a second warning when he never actually said anything!!
North Rocks had a few chances in the first half but our defence did a great job in keeping them out. With the scores 0-0 at half time and Mick B off the field with an injured groin we were still confident of getting the right result.
Unfortunately for us North Rocks scored early in the second half with their big striker getting his head to a ball just before our keeper and his header ended up in the back of the net….
We managed to get one back shortly after thanks to a cross from Will which found the head of a North Rocks defender and ended up in their goal. Will’s only query after the game was whether this counts as a goal for him and if so does this mean he does not need to do a nudie run at the end of the year? The jury is still out on that one…..
The second half saw a number of yellow cards, including one to our keeper for bringing down their big striker in the box which led to a penalty being awarded. However our keeper managed to guess the right way and managed to tip the ball around the post….much to the relief of his team!
Alfy probably had the best chance for us in the 2nd half when a shot from 30 yards unfortunately hit the cross bar with their keeper well beaten,
Despite that the final score we were happy with the result. The one lesson to come out of this game is that we need to read the referee a bit better as the game saw 5 yellow cards …. mostly for dissent …. and a red to one of our players as well.
